Velma Leone Smalley, 96 of Craigsville passed away on Thursday, August 11, 2016 at Webster Nursing & Rehab Center in Cowen. She was born January 8, 1920 in Wheeler to Darius and Arta Anderson Lowther and lived the majority of her life in Webster and Nicholas Counties. She retired from Island Creek Coal Company after 25 years of service as a Business Clerk. She was a member of the St. Luke United Methodist Church of Craigsville where she was very active in the Children’s Church. She was a past 4-H leader, loved to read, travel and quilt, and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Velma is survived by her son Michael (wife Kay) Smalley of Webster Springs; daughter Patricia (husband Richard) Spencer of Greer, SC; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; special friends Crystal Woods, Lou Russell, and Paula Gooble; and at-home caregivers Becky Foster, Sheila Seabolt, and Hermanetta Brown. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Golden Smalley; infant son Woodrow Smalley; brothers Glenn and Loye Lowther; and sister Leah Smalley. The family wishes to extend their thanks to Webster Nursing & Rehab Center for the wonderful care they gave to their mother and grandmother during her stay with them.

Friends may join the family for visitation on Monday, August 15, 2016 from 12:00 to 2:00 PM at Adams-Reed Funeral Home. Funeral Services to celebrate Velma’s life will be held at 2:00 PM at the Funeral Home with Rev. Keith Williams officiating. Interment will follow in West Virginia Memorial Gardens, Calvin.
